Miloš Obilić [Milosh Obilich] is not only a legendary Serbian knight from the Middle Ages, often mentioned in Serbian folk epic poetry; he is not only a folk hero often sung about. He is an intriguing and interesting historical figure to whom Slavomir Nastasijević [Slavomeer Nastasiyevich] dedicated his novel Legende o Milošu Obiliću [Legende o Miloshu Obilichu] (Legends of Miloš Obilić).
Tradition has it that Miloš Obilić [Milosh Obilich] was in the service of the ruler of Serbia, Lazar Hrebeljanović [Lazar Hrebelianovich], during the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans in 1389. Legends say that during the Battle of Kosovo, where the Serbs were trying to defend their independence, Miloš Obilić approached Sultan Murat I [Sultan Murat the First] and killed him, after which the Sultan’s guards killed him. In the 19th century, Miloš became revered as a saint in the Serbian Orthodox Church.
