About the book:
Immediately after her birth, Lisbeth is separated from her mother and entrusted to her wet nurse, Mattie, an enslaved woman and young mother who has been separated from her own baby boy in order to care for her tiny new charge. Thus begins a powerful bond that will shape both their lives over the decades to come. Although Lisbeth lives a life of privilege, she finds only loneliness in the company of her cold and pragmatic mother and rigid slave-owning father. As Lisbeth grows up, Mattie becomes more like family to her than any of her own relatives, while visits to the slave quarters – and its lively, warm-hearted community – bring them even closer. But can two women born into such vastly different circumstances remain close without consequences?
This deeply moving story of an unexpected love follows the lives of two profoundly different women who, each in her own way, strive for freedom and dignity.
