About the movie:
Kaži zašto me ostavi [Kazhi zashtor mair ostavi] (Say Why Have You Left Me) is a Serbian film made in 1993, directed by Oleg Novković [Olleg Novkovich], and written by Srđan Koljević [Srdjan Kolyevich]. This film is also Oleg Novković’s graduation film and premiered at the Niš Film Festival in 1993.
The film is about the nineties and the whirlwind of war in which SFRJ (Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) was disintegrating. Peđa [Pedja], a young man who lives in Belgrade, receives an invitation to a military exercise, however, overnight he found himself on the battlefield near Vukovar. After his shocking experiences, he returns to Belgrade, but as a completely different man. Wandering aimlessly through the streets of Belgrade, he accidentally runs into Vera [Verra], a girl he met in Vukovar under very tragic circumstances. He becomes obsessed with her and does not stop thinking about her and follows her everywhere, completely forgetting about his friends and family, as well as his girlfriend who wants to take him to Paris, where they would try to start life from the beginning, far from the war and the economic crisis. The film ends tragically – at an impromptu party on a Belgrade raft, there is a conflict between Peđa and Marko, and in the fight, Marko involuntarily fires a shot from the gun that Peđa brought from the front and kills him.
The light motive of the film is the song Say Why Have You Left Me, performed by Ana Sofrenović [Ana Sofrairnovich], who also made her debut as a singer in this film.
