About the book:
The nameless narrator goes to Venice to find Juliana Bordereau, the elderly lover of Jeffrey Aspern, the famous, now dead, American poet. The narrator introduces himself to the old woman as a man looking for a place to live and is ready to court her niece Miss Tita, an unreputable, somewhat naive landlady, in the hope that she will be able to see some of Aspern’s letters and other documents that Juliana keeps. Those documents would be the most beautiful addition to the book about Jeffrey Aspern that he is writing with his partner John Cumnor.
Miss Tita has revealed the existence of such documents in a letter to the narrator and his publishing partner, but he believes she did so on Juliana’s instructions. The narrator eventually reveals his true intentions to Miss Tita, who promises to help him.
Despite his efforts, the narrator is never able to determine whether those documents actually exist. The best opportunity arises when the old woman suddenly falls ill, and after her death a few days later, he finally manages to learn the truth.
