A word from the editor,
Dear readers,
How to solve the evident culture crisis of (non)reading, lack of true reading, in the contemporary time, that produces a reader impersonator, or the one who is not able to breathe new meaning to what they read and to problematize the systems?
The culture of (non)reading is conduciveto a few factors. Namely, nowadays, as opposed to a “dying” reader, there appears, or rather, there is born a buyer, with which there is an evident and mass production of Schund literature. Also, conducive to that is the rapport of publisher towards an author and their book. The rapport that is primarily managed by the issues of profit and market. It is being forgotten that book is a spiritual creation, and that author is beginning to be treated as a brand, where the industry does not allow them to“die”. Author and theoretician Slobodan Vladušić[Slobboddan Vladushich]notices: “The attractiveness of shopping arises from the fact that the so called little man feel they are right only as a buyer. And in no other way. That means that there is a tacit social convention that only as buyers we are get a treatment that we do not get as people and citizens any more: and that is a power to decide about something. As buyers we are always right while in other roles we never are. There fore, shopping serves for keeping the illusion of our own dignity, of the fact that we have some power of decision making, that we do not have as citizens any more. That is what is, in a way, at the same time funny and tragic: that shopping has nothing to do with buying goods any more, but with the feeling of being recognised. It seems to that it is the feeling that turns the man of today into a consumer. Of course, I am not a man who preaches that no one should buy anything, but I would like that shopping becomes buying again, which means that a man does not compensate his civic and national muteness with it.”
Where does the creation of a consumer reader lead to?
That is where we get passivity because, one does not fear of the person who is not a true reader but a buyer. They have no power to instil a new sense or meanings to something. They do not question anything offered to them and, in that way, such a treatment of culture of (non)reading becomes more efficient and more profitable than the former censorship. Let’s remind that, in 1981,Pinochet banned“Don Quixote”, justifiably believing that individuals could extract from that work ideas that could lead to a rebellion. That is why the easiest and best solution is a decision to offer as broad readers’ range, who want to impersonate readers, as possible something from this so called literary reality.
Hoping that we shall jointly contribute to the fight for a true reader, we present you the new, February edition of the magazine “Glas”.
