About the book:
Tartuffe is one of the most remarkable works of Moliere. It is a five acts comedy, written in alexandrine verse, where Moliere criticises religious hypocrisy. The topic of this piece of work has caused bans of its public performance as of its premiere in Versailles in 1664 all through 1669.
The influence that this piece of work had on the society can also be identified upon the fact that three languages – French, English, and Spanish – adopted the term “Tartuffe” to denote a hypocritical person, or a person who boasts with the virtues they do not have. In that way, Tartuffe is even today a symbol of hypocrisy and a litmus filter for honesty and lie in a society.
