About the book:
The background of the song Santa Maria della Salute is very interesting. Namely, in his fifties, Laza Kostić has met a nineteen years old Lenka Dunđerski, daughter of his friend Laza Dunđerski. Kostić was a famous poet, a celebrity, a portly man, well dressed, of noble posture, very educated and eloquent. The girl fell in love with a mature gentleman, and the poet was crazy in love. In the poet, struggles occurred, conflict of sense and sensibility. He runs away from Lenka and his feelings to the Monastery Krušedol and spends five years there. Laza Dunđerski suggests to his friend to marry a wealthy widow Jula Palački which he does in 1895. The same year, Lenka Dunđerski passes away. To run away from misery and sorrow, he leaves for Venice with his wife. There he visits the Church of Our Lady of Salvation from 17th century. The exquisite beauty of the church impressed the poet. In that moment, inside him, admiration towards the church and incurable love for Lenka meet and blend.
